The long awaited iPhone 4 has finally been released by Apple. So far, this has been the most successful iPhone launch by Apple. In the 5 weeks since its June 24th launch in the US, more than 3 million units have been sold around the world. It hits Australia and Arrow Voice & Data on Friday 30th July 2010.

New features include an upgraded 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, FaceTime which allows iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 video calling over Wi-Fi using the built in front facing video camera, Retina Display offering a 960×640 pixel display which is twice the resolution of the previous iPhone 3GS, HD Video Recording and Editing.

Apple has also upgraded the internal software to iOS 4. This upgraded software offers features such as Multitasking which allows multiple applications to keep running in the background, Folders for Apps which allows installed applications to be arranged in folders, Home Screen wallpapers.

Since the release of the iPhone 4, several problems have been reported. The screen might initially appear to have a yellowish tint when first taken out of the box. This is related to a glue that is used in the manufacturing process. This will disappear within a few days as the glue dries.

The second reported problem relates to the iPhone 4 antenna. The previous iPhone 3GS had an internal antenna inside the body of the phone. The iPhone 4 antenna is part of the steel strip that surrounds the external sides of the phone. The problem arises when gripping the phone in the left hand palm, blocking the mobile signal. Apple is offering affected users a free bumper case that fits around the edge of the phone for users that purchase the iPhone 4 before September 30th 2010.

The iPhone 4 works on the existing 2G and 3G mobile networks. It supports the existing 850MHz and 2100MHz 3G networks. The iPhone 4 now also supports the 900MHz 3G network as used by Vodafone in regional and rural areas of Australia. This allows regional Vodafone users that were previously limited to 2G speeds to access high speed 3G data services.

The ourtight purchase price for iPhone 4 is Australia is listed at $849 inc GST for the 16GB iPhone 4 and $999 inc GST for the 32GB iPhone 4. Initially the iPhone 4 will only be available in black. The white version has been delayed by Apple for several months due to manufacturing problems.

Plans are available from Vodafone, Optus and Telstra. The plans from each of the carriers are listed below.

Based on the tables above, you can clearly see that Vodafone has the best value and most comparative iPhone 4 offers. For example, a 32GB iPhone 4 on a $49 cap would cost $61.46 per month on Telstra on a 24 month contract with $400 of total value and 1.2GB of data. On Optus it would cost $64 with 1GB of data, and Vodafone would cost $59 with 1.5GB of data. Vodafone is also the only carrier to offer a low cost $29 cap plan for low usage customers.

Arrow Voice & Data will be offering the iPhone 4 on Vodafone from Friday 30th July 2010. We offer one point of contact with a dedicated telephone account manager.

As a Premium Business Dealer, Arrow has access to a range of business plans offered by Vodafone, including;

$49, $69 & $79 Single Business Caps

$75, $79 & $99 Unlimited Business Caps

So which is better, Single Business Caps or Unlimited Business Caps?

Well it all comes down to knowing what you want, how much you use your phone and what type of phone you are after.

If you’re looking for phones for your staff, why not remove the fear of huge excess call charges, go for an unlimited plan and give your staff the benefit of being able to use their work phone for personal use too. It won’t cost any more and is a great benefit for you staff.

Are you a gadget freak and want the latest smartphone, but don’t make that many calls on your mobile, A single business cap could be the answer. .

Take the latest iPhone 4G 32GB, it retails for $999.00. It can be had with a $49 Single Business Cap for an additional $10 per month. Over 24 months this is a total of $1416. Take off the cost of the iPhone and the plan is only costing $417 over 24 months, or just over $17 per month. That $17 per month gives you $450 worth of calls and 1.5Gb of data. An absolute bargain!

So, have a think about your needs and call Arrow Sales on 1300 555 330 and let us guide you through the process of finding the best plan for your needs.

or read on for more information on these plans…..

Single Business Caps

Single Business Caps are ideal when you have a reasonable idea of your usage requirements. Each cap has an “included value” up to which you can make calls without incurring any additional charges over the cap value. The higher the plan, the more included value. Included call types are standard national and international voice calls, TXT, PXT, Video PXT and video calls, voicemail, calls to 13, 15 & 1800 numbers, customer care, diversions and directory assistance. Call types not included and charged in addition to the cap value are STK Alerts, Content and My Vodafone Purchases, Premium TXT and International Roaming.

In addition to calls, the Single Business Cap plans also include a data allowance, the higher the cap plan, the more included data.

The $79 Single Business Cap also includes unlimited TXT & PXT.

Single Business Caps also include a very generous handset allowance. Once again, the higher the cap plan, the higher the value of the handsets that are available on that plan.

Single Business Caps also include unlimited Vodafone to Vodafone and 3 calls.

Full details of the Single Business Cap plans can be found at http://www.arrowmobiles.com.au/single-business-caps-1-4-users.html

Be sure to call Arrow on 1300 555 330 to check the latest offers.

From now until 30/09/10 we are offering unlimited free voicemail on all Single Business Caps

Unlimited Business Caps

Designed for those that are on their mobile all the time, Unlimited Business Caps offer unlimited voice and video calls to all mobile and standard landline numbers in Australia. They also offer unlimited national and international TXT, PXT and Video PXT.

The $75 Unlimited Business Cap is available exclusively to Premium Business Dealers and requires and ABN and a minimum of 3 connections. It includes unlimited voicemail and selection of business style handsets are included with this plan, including BlackBerry, enabling you to take advantage unlimited BlackBerry email and browsing.

The $79 and $99 Unlimited Business Caps vary only slightly. The $99 Unlimited Business Cap includes unlimited voicemail, calls to 13 & 18 numbers, 2GB of data and a vast range of handsets for no additional charge.

The $79 Unlimited Business Cap forgoes voicemail and calls to 13 & 18 numbers, and offers 1 GB of data. The range of handsets at no additional cost is more limited than the $99 Unlimited Business Cap, but there is still a great range of standard handsets, smartphones and BlackBerrys available.

A VPN is a secure connection to a private computer network that runs across the internet. It allows business users to securely connect to their corporate networks and access network resources such as shared documents.

Connecting to a corporate network via a VPN is quite simple with the iPhone. The iPhone supports most common VPN protocols including Cisco IPSec, L2TP over IPSec, and PPTP.

To setup a new VPN connection on an iPhone, make sure you are connected to either the 3G mobile network or a WiFi network. Next tap Settings –> General –> Network –> VPN. Then tap Add VPN Configuration. The following screen will then appear.

Choose L2TP, PPTP or IPSec depending on the type of VPN that is setup in your organisation. Enter all of the details such as username and password as provided by your IT department.

Once the setup is complete, the connection will be listed on the VPN screen under Choose a Configuration…

To initiate a connection, slide the VPN button to On. Depending on your setup you may be prompted to enter your username and password.

You should now be connected to your VPN. You can tell this by looking at the top of your iPhone screen. It will display a VPN icon as shown in the image below.

When I ask people about the business uses of their iPhone, most people do not even mention the iPhone’s calendar as a key business tool. Yes they agree that it’s usable once they get their head around it but the general feeling is that Blackberry and Windows based phones have better calendars. Personally, I believe the the iPhones calendar app is a very handy tool and as such I would like to share a small tip that should help you with your iPhone.

My step by step guide with images on how to add a calender appointment to your iPhone.

Start with the home screen.

Press “calender” – you can add an appointment from either List, Day, or Month etc.

To start, tap the “+” (plus) button at top right to call up the “Add Event” screen.

Then tap “Title” and “Location”. Add in the event name and location as below.

Don’t forget to hit the “Save” button or you will lose your data.

Further down, fill out the additional fields and note “Start” and “End” times will normally default to 1hr apart, but you can change them to reflect the actual time and/or duration. Furthermore, you can toggle the “All-day” slider to “on” to float the event on top of your other appointments. Things like birthdays and anniversaries normally default to “All-day” events.

The repeat function allows you to setup appointments that happen on a daily, weekly, monthly, or even yearly basis. With the ability to setup custom repetitions as well (every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, for example), this is an excellent feature of this calendar.

For users familiar with Microsoft Outlook the Alerts feature is familiar as it let you have the iPhone pop up a reminder for you before the event and it also let you decide how long before the event you get the pop up. You just need to Tap the time you would like.

Now we come to the feature that allows you to color code your multiple calendars. For e.g you can choose which color-coded calendar you’d like your new event to appear in. Family, work, training, etc. can all hold different events. This feature needs to be discussed in depth and I hope to have a special blog to cover this in the not too distant future.

And Lastly, the notes feature is as simple and efficient as it gets and let you add notes to events. Much like notes in any other calendar.

Once you have entered all that you need for the event , tap “Done” at the top right and the appointment will show up in your calendar.

I hope this little unofficial guide aids you in your quest to fully utilise your iPhone and if you have anything valuable to add, don’t forget to add a comment below.

Till next time, Vikesh S.

With Australian’s being one of the worlds top mobile phone using nations per capita we all know there is so many choices, so many varied mobile plans, so many mobile service providers, so many headaches when it’s your time to shop.

Having been involved in the Australian mobile industry for the past13 years the changes I have seen to not only the technology of handsets but the actual mobile plans themselves has been amazing to say the least.

In terms of mobile plans we have seen a shift from paying a monthly access fee without any included usage in the early to mid 90’s to the other extreme where we are now seeing unlimited cap plans that basically include all usage within Australia. This chalk & cheese change to our mobile plans sees us with far greater value for money than we have ever experienced.

In Australian’s business world these unlimited mobile plans are the way to go. Not only do they save business’ thousands of dollars per annum, they also provide peace of mind knowing that when the bill arrives you should have a general idea of how much it will be before you have even viewed it.

With that said, we still need to shop carefully as not all unlimited mobile cap plans are the same. Below are some of the common inclusions that unlimited mobile cap plans provide us:

Unlimited standard calls to Australian mobiles & landlines

Unlimited standard video calls to Australian mobiles

Unlimited standard SMS to Australian mobiles

Unlimited call diversions

Unlimited Voicemail (Deposit & Retrieval)

Unlimited Calls to your service providers customer service number

Below are some common unlimited mobile cap exclusions:

International voice calls

International SMS & MMS

Premium SMS (eg, TV competitions, Horoscopes etc…)

Online content downloads (Web Surfing, Email etc…)

Calls to 13 / 1300 / 1800 / 1900 numbers

Before you purchase you should know exactly what you are getting & more importantly know exactly where your usage is going. Its no point selecting an unlimited cap plan that excludes a service that you use alot of.

Arrow Voice & Data are in a privileged position to be able to offer many mobile options to Australian Business’. You are guaranteed to find the plan that best fits your mobile fleets usage. In order to maximise your savings you should call an Arrow mobile professional today for a quote. You can be rest assured Arrow will fit your business out with the right plan.

So you don’t have a credit card but would still like to get free stuff for your iPhone or iPod. According to the Apple website and a couple of other links on the web there is a way to do this.

I checked out the instructions provided on the Apple website, which are in step by step format, so I thought I would give it a go.

It looked easy, the instructions seemed simple enough, so, armed with the instructions open in one tab and the Apple website open in another I decided to see just how easy it was.

The very first instruction advises me to sign out if I already have an account. I don’t, so I went straight to instruction number 2. “Pick your country by clicking on the country flag located in the bottom right corner of the main iTunes Store page.” Ok, so having gone on to the apple.com website I clicked on my country, Australia.

So far, so good. Instruction 3: “If your country also has an iTunes Store, you’ll need to navigate to the App Store by clicking on App Store from the top navigation bar.

If not, proceed to step 4”, ok so my navigation bar doesn’t have App Store showing. I got a little confused at this point. Was I supposed to now click on iTunes or Store? I tried both.

Store was clearly the wrong choice so was hopeful the iTunes tab would clear things up, I found a link in the bottom right corner that said “Browse App Store”. Now, bearing in mind that instruction number 4 said that I could not proceed to the next step without purchasing a free app.

So here I am in the App Store desperately trying to purchase my free app but I am having difficulty.

My problem could well be related to the fact that I am trying to do this on my work computer which doesn’t have iTunes.

It is about this stage that I give up trying to do this at work and hope that someone out there had more luck at following the instructions than I.

I’d love to hear your feedback.

Elizabeth

The new FaceTime video calling feature of iPhone 4 does not require mobile service after first use, enabling users to establish video chat from any WiFi hotspot, even while in Airplane Mode.

The apple insider originally when reviewing the FaceTime video calling feature originally stated that you would need to have an active mobile service and would not be able to be in airplane mode to make this type of call. This is incorrect. As long as you have completed a face time call in the past you are able to connect to the FaceTime video calling feature if you have no mobile coverage or if you are on an airplane and you have the airplane mode setup.

It is also possible to call, without any mobile service, a new contact you’ve never previously established a FaceTime chat with, although this must be done from Contacts (create a contact if necessary, then open it and hit the FaceTime button). The standard phone dialer keypad offers no option to call a number using FaceTime directly (yet).

Please see the following blog from the apple insider Apple Insider
