Business Internet Access

2 Oct 2008, 12:21 pm

What is the most important equipment in your office? Most people will say their phone lines very few will consider their internet access in the Top 5 of business critical services. Take a few moments to consider the impact on your business without an internet connection. Think specifically about the following items:

-    How many orders / office communications / supplier updates are sent / received via email.
-    Where do your staff gather there information from?
-    Do you access supplier ordering systems via the internet?
-    Do your customers communicate to your business via an online chat?
-    How are you reading this very blog?

Business Internet Access is CRITICAL to today’s business. How much productivity is lost without a connection to the internet? A recent study of non-IT related businesses who rated internet outside their Top 5 ‘critical’ requirements showed that productivity dropped between 30-50% without internet access and this excludes the IT industry and those that rate internet as a critical component to their business.

So then why do businesses believe that they can operate off a single residential internet connection? Sure ‘unlimited*’ or 150 GB and ASDL2+ for $49.95 sounds appealing, but what happens when it breaks? Let’s take a conservative look at some figures:

-    An office of 10 people, with an average income of $65,000 PA.
-    A residential grade internet connection of $49.95 per month drops out.
-    The typical resolution of  a fault takes 48 hours from the time it was reported (of course if finger pointing between the ISP and the Phone provider happens this can extend the resolution time 5 fold).
-    Assume a 30% Productivity Loss
-    Just in wages the productivity loss has cost $1625. The business cost due to lost business in likely to be significantly higher.
-    In a good year the average residential grade internet connection will suffer between 2 – 5 outages.

On the other end of the spectrum, a Business Grade Internet Connection with a 99.95% uptime SLA, a GUARANTEED 4 hour restore time to a fault would have no where near the devastating effect of a residential grade outage.

Another major difference between residential internet connections versus Business Grade Internet connections is the contention ratio. The contention ratio (in its simplest form) is the number of other customers sharing the internet ‘pipe’ (i.e.: the connection to the outside world). A typical residential connection will have a 50:1 contention ratio that is 49 other people fighting to get access to the internet with you at the same time. This results in slower access to the internet, pages that sometimes down work, it destroys VoIP, and while is generally fine for the home with 1 or 2 users, what about the 10 people in the office? Business Grade Internet typically has between a 5:1 and 10:1 contention ratio. Offering a smoother and more constant internet connection.

A business grade internet connection is an insurance policy against outages, it offers a vastly superior internet speed and experience. There is NO COMPROMISE on the overall quality and one less thing to worry about.
