Business VoIP

20 Oct 2008, 4:09 pm

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) – the buzz word of the 21st Century, is a method of making phone calls bypassing traditional phone networks by using the internet up too the farthest point before requiring the call to cross over onto a traditional network. The primary advantage bypassing the traditional network is simply the cost of connecting a call. By avoiding traditional networks and the ‘intercarrier termination fees’ (the fees carriers charge each other to call their respective networks’ VoIP providers are able to offer significant savings on a prospective customer’s phone bill.

By is this appropriate for business?

At Arrow we understand that the most crucial element of any business is its ability to communicate with its customers. Traditionally this is either via face to face, over the phone, fax or email. So where does VoIP come into replacing these traditional communications methods? Simply put a residential VoIP connection ONLY addresses 1 key communication method and that is communicating over the phone.

The problems associated with VoIP is they rely almost entirely on the status of an internet connection. Of course there are other factors, such as the actual VoIP service provider and their connection to the ‘real world telephones’    however for the most part, quality and connection issues are almost always a result of an internet connection problem. Very seldomly, is a VoIP Provider an Internet Service Provider, and even if a particular carrier is a ‘dual carriage’ supplier the focus is either 1 product or the other.

So can VoIP work for business? The answer depends on what the objectives of the business are. If a business recognizes that calls are of critical importance then cheap residential grade VoIP is definitely a no go. Business Grade VoIP is next to impossible to find. Arrow Voice and Data for the last 3 years has sold VoDSL, or Voice over DSL , while not technically VoIP, the VoDSL product is a PSTN replacement product offering a true replacement for PSTN, at almost identical pricing to VoIP?

How can such a product be achieved? Easily, the VoDSL product is bundled with Australia’s cheapest SHDSL internet access. When 4 lines are bundled with a Business Grade, SLA’d, Guaranteed Performance Internet solution ANY business with ANY supplier will see a dramatic reduction in cost, whilst having no drop in call quality.
