VoIP over Wireless Data

5 Dec 2008, 4:02 pm

How many ways are there to make a simple telephone call these days?  A few, & still counting as the internet & more directly different flavours of internet hit our shores.

I had a client the other day wanting to make phone calls via VoIP over 3G wireless data. Sounds like a mouthful, but it actually works. Of course as any form of data transmission, your a slave to your connection to the internet & how congested it may be, but as mentioned before it is possible.

You may ask why would i go to the trouble of inplementing a solution like this, when i’ve got a perfectly good fixed wire phone line & phone to use. I will give you some pros & cons for using VoIP over 3g wireless data.

Pros:

Eliminates fixed wire phone line rental.

Enables users to make untimed STD calls (ISP Dependant)

Portability - You can make a phone call wherever you have an internet connection with sufficient speed.

Cons:

Your call will only be as good as your Internet connection. (Congestion, Availability etc..).

Call quality will be sacrificed, (heavily in some instances).

Monthly Data allowance (Negates Line Rental savings).
