Mega Megapixel Camera Phones
19 Nov 2008, 2:10 pmIf you thought the compact digital camera market had developed rapidly with it’s megapixel count, t
aking about 7 years to evolve from 3 megapixels to todays 12 megapixels, it is nothing compated to pace in camera phones.
The very first 1 megapixel camera phone was only launched about 3 years ago. Today, 2 megapixels are pretty much standard for all but the cheapest mobile phones, 3.2 and 5 megapixels are relatively common, and 8 megapixels camerphones have just been announced locally from Sony Ericsson, Samsung and LG.
Sony has now announced that it has developed a new CMOS image sensor for use in cameraphones that offers the industry’s highest ever pixel count at 12.25 effective megapixels.
Designed to meet the increasing need for advanced image quality within cameraphones, the sensor uses proprietary Sony technology. The sensor measures just 7.5mm, so will not add bulk to cameraphones in which it is installed.
