iPhone 3G Now Best Seller in US
18 Nov 2008, 10:34 amAccording to a new study by market research firm The NPD Group, Apple’s iPhone has now surpassed the Motorola RAZR as the best selling mobile handset purchased by US based adults in the third-quarter of 2008.
“The displacement of the RAZR by the iPhone 3G represents a watershed shift in handset design from fashion to fashionable functionality” said Ross Rubin, the director of industry analysis for NPD. “Four of the five best-selling handsets in the third quarter were optimised for messaging and other advanced internet features.”
For the last 3 years the RAZR has been the best selling mobile handset. Despite an overall third-quarter market decline of 15 % year-on-year, Apple had its best quarter ever.
In the fiscal fourth-quarter, Apple sold 6.8 million iPhones, that’s more phones than all other quarters combined. Apple has met its goal of selling more than 10 million iPhones in 2008.
Apple also sold more iPhones in the quarter than RIM sold Blackberrys.
The top-five selling handsets in the US currently are;
Apple’s iPhone 3G
Motorola RAZR V3
Blackberry Curve
LG Rumor.
LG enV2
43% of US mobile handset buyers said they needed a camera, and 36% needed the ability to send and receive text messages.
The number of phones with a QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth and the MP3 player are also on the rise, according to NPD’s research.
